"Mawwiage. Mawwiage is what bwings us together today. That bwessed awangement of wove, twue wove..."- Princess Bride
(I apologize. I love that movie.)
Marriage seems like an odd thing to teach middle and high schoolers. They are not ready for that "adult" stuff right? Oddly enough, now is the time it should be taught. See Peter was not just talking about marriage in general in this passage, he was speaking to what it means to submit in marriage...for the HUSBAND and the WIFE. Many people claim the wife is the only one that is to submit, but that is not true. Husband and wife are to submit to each other (v.7). So why teach this to your children?
Unfortunately, kids today are shown a distorted view of marriage. See marriage is the closest picture we have to the nature of our triune God. What do I mean by that? God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit together are our one God. They each have different roles and responsibilities that help achieve the same goal. In marriage, a husband and wife become one (Gen. 2:24) with both seeking to grow in their faith to become like Christ.
The image of marriage the world gives is that 1) its unnecessary, 2) a hindrance to personal happiness and 3) easily broken. This is not the way it should be. Marriage is a sacred and beautiful thing that should be taught to kids at a young age. Instead of us as parents letting our kids get a Disney version of what marriage should be, we should show our kids that marriage is the second most rewarding relationship you can have.
