Steve came to us at Higher Ground as our Executive Pastor on January 1, 2018. He spent his first thirty years as an adult in the business world working in various management positions. God called him to preach at thirty-seven and to pastor bio-vocationally at thirty-nine. After pastoring bi-vocationally for nine years he was called in July of 2000 to full time service to Christ.
These are Steve’s own words as to his life, “I didn’t become a follower of Jesus Christ until I was almost thirty-four years old. My heart was very selfish and all I really cared about was myself. Sure, I loved my wife and my children, but what I wanted was more important than what they needed. I thought having a good job and making a lot of money was all I needed. When my youngest child was born, he was born with some serious birth defects. That was when I realized I really needed God in my life. I prayed to Him and asked His forgiveness for all of the things I had done, and for all the selfishness in my heart.”
Steve and Carolyn have been blessed with four children, now adults; Angie Spires, Julie Harrell, Whitney Jackson, and their son Tim Smith. We also have six grandchildren.
He enjoys playing guitar and reading. Some of his favorite authors include: Joel Rosenberg, David Jeremiah, Tom Rainer, and of course God.
