For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve...

Mark 10:45

The Higher Ground Baptist Church Care House serves as a ministry to feed and clothe those in need in our community.  Our goal is to provide food and clothing for our client’s physical needs and also, through kindness and grace, administer to their spiritual and emotional needs.

Statistics

Each month we distribute approximately 25,000 pounds of food,  serve approximately 1,600 individuals, and distribute approximately 3,500 articles of clothing.
We serve families at Kennedy Elementary where children have been identified as chronically hungry by their school nurse or counselors.

History

The Care House opened on May 7, 2013 and distributed both food and clothing out of one house.
We served only six families the first week.

Current Operation

We have expanded to three houses using one for food, one for clothing, and one for food storage and sorting clothing.
The operation is staffed by all volunteers and we serve families within our church and community who are in need.  A valid ID and verification of address are required to be served.
The Care House operates on funds from outside donations, designated funds received in offerings to the church, and funds allocated in the church budget.  Food and clothing are also donated by church members and other outside sources.  USDA Donated Foods (Commodities) are sourced from Second Harvest Food Bank.  We also purchase food from local markets and from Second Harvest Food Bank.
In 2017, we were one of the regional recipients of Food Lion’s Great Pantry Makeover.  Food Lion provided the Care House with an industrial freezer and refrigerator.  Their employees also spent a day painting and updating the Care House and also stocked the pantry with dry goods.
